What is a Dietitian?

Are you confused about what to eat?  Do you find yourself wondering what foods have carbohydrates and how much you are supposed to have?  Which foods have good fats in them?  Will eating fruit raise my blood glucose levels? Do you go too long without eating in order to lose weight and then end up overeating because you are so hungry? Do you have eating issues and find yourself thinking about food and how your body looks a large part of the day?  Visiting a registered dietitian and reviewing your goals for controlling your diabetes or cholesterol; getting help and guidance with disordered eating or dealing with weight issues are all topics that a dietitian or RD can help you with.
Hi, I'm Jean Hoppe, Pratt Medical Center's registered dietitian (RD). I have been providing medical nutrition therapy here at Pratt since 1992. I received my B.S. in nutrition from Florida State University and completed my internship at Alexandria Hospital in Alexandria, Virginia. I also am a certified group fitness instructor through the American Council on Exercise. I enjoy working with clients and seeing the positive changes that they make when they begin to understand how food and activity improves their health and how to enjoy stress free living.
An initial nutrition consult lasts about 60-75 minutes and follow up visits, if needed, are around 30 minutes. Please see the insurance list which will indicate which insurance companies cover my services.  It is always best to call your insurance company to see if they will cover for a visit for a dietitian or for medical nutrition therapy and be sure to tell them WHY you are coming to see me as they may cover for only certain diagnoses.   During your initial visit you will fill out a nutrition assessment which you can fill out ahead of time by downloading from this site.  A $25 fee will be charged for failure to cancel 24 hours before an appointment.

I am a provider for the following insurance companies:
Aetna, Allilance, Mamsi/MDIPA, Cigna, United Healthcare, First Health, Medicare, Trigon FEP
